Levine has a penchant for tattoos – with over two full sleeves on his arms and over a dozen other designs inked across his body. You might be surprised to learn not all of his tattoos have a special meaning.
While this is true, some of the star’s tattoos are self-explanatory, such as the word “mom” inside a heart and a portrait of a guitar.
As Levine often walks around topless on stage or off, the full display of his body gives people a chance to ogle his ink. This has left people wondering about his various tattoos, which include a variety of words, symbols, and images.
Here is a breakdown of Adam Levine’s tattoo landscape:
According to Body Art Guru, Adam Levine has at least 31 tattoos on his body, ranging in size from little inscriptions to enormous designs.

A black beaded necklace, the phrase “true love” across his knuckles, and “California” across his toned abs are among the most noticeable.
The “true love” piece and the phrases “you’re so cool” in cursive three times on the inside of his right arm were both inspired by his wife, Behati Prinsloo. His wife got the same tattoo as him.
The actor’s passion and love for animals are reflected in his numerous wildlife tattoos. On his left arm, he got his first tattoo, a dove.
Levine explained his first tattoo to People:
“It was five days after 9/11. I felt this needed to say something with this peaceful thing on my body.”

Levine’s passion and commitment to animals, notably his late beloved pooch, Frankie Girl, is symbolized with a paw mark on his back. An eagle, lion, tiger, and shark are also painted on the singer’s body.
Just above his heart, the Maroon 5 vocalist has inked the Sanskrit word for “tapas,” which refers to a spiritual practice rather than a love of the Spanish small plates.

Levine told People:
“A few years ago I fell in love with yoga. The word ‘tapas’ stands for fire … passion … This keeps me connected to something that changed my life.”

Levine has inked a massive piece on his back that took artist Bryan Randolph of Spider Murphy’s Tattoo shop, six months to fully ink on his skin. Swallows surround the mermaid angel cradling a skull.
The number “10” can be seen on Levine’s bicep, which was inked for Maroon 5‘s tenth anniversary. Likewise, he has the number “222” imprinted on his forearm, which was the door number of the studio that Maroon 5 recorded for the very first time.
As of November 2021, Levine’s most recent tattoo is of a butterfly landing on a spiderweb. He inked the new tattoo right in the center of his neck, above his “Family” tattoo.
Along with images of his new ink, Levine wrote in his Instagram post:
“Wise man once said… ‘when Instagram goes down…tattoo your throat…’ his name was @nathan_kostechko.”

In March this year, Levine had inked a portrait of ocean waves on his left leg, designed by tattoo artist Nathan Kostechko.
Likewise, in August, Bill Canales, a tattoo artist, spent 13 hours over two days inking a complex Japanese-inspired artwork on The Voice coach’s right thigh. The ink complimented the tattoo of ocean waves.
